“I am proud to support and endorse Brian Rooney for Congress,” said Vadnais. “Brian understands the challenges that we face today in our state and nation. I am confident that with his personal and professional skill set, Brian Rooney will effectively represent Michigan’s 7th Congressional District in Washington.”

Vadnais continued, “Brian has a deep understanding of the issues his fellow veterans encounter when they come home from war. I encourage veterans and all those who support our men and women in uniform to vote for Brian Rooney on August 3rd. We need more leaders like him representing us in Congress.”

Congressional races have in recent years been mostly ho-hum affairs for Michigan, with longtime incumbents routinely returned to Washington and few fresh faces in the mix.

This year, however, three U.S. House seats are open, and few members of the Michigan delegation can feel secure given the sorry economy and uncertain national political climate.

House members serve two-year terms with a base annual salary of $174,000. Based on research, interviews and questionnaires, here are the Free Press endorsements in the Aug. 3 congressional primaries.

7th District

(All or part of seven south-central Michigan counties, including cities of Jackson, Battle Creek, Coldwater, Adrian and Hillsdale)

Three conservative Republicans are competing to challenge Democrat Mark Schauer of Battle Creek, who wrested the seat from the GOP in 2008.

BRIAN ROONEY, 37, a lawyer from Dexter and a relative newcomer to Michigan (he actually moved here for a job) would be the strongest GOP candidate. As a captain in the U.S. Marines, Rooney was deeply involved in the complex work of resettling Fallujah after the fierce battle for control of the Iraq city, so navigating Congress may not seem so tough. Sharp and serious, Rooney wants to repeal the estate tax and "flatten the tax code" to make it more fair. Rooney is a grandson of the founder of pro football's Pittsburgh Steelers and serves on the board of the team, which remains the family business.

Rooney tops Republican opponents who have been in race for over a year.

(Jackson, MI) - Brian Rooney, Republican candidate for Congress in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, today announced that his campaign brought in over $150,000 in the second quarter.  Rooney has demonstrated that he has the resources necessary to defeat liberal Mark Schauer on November 2nd.

“This last quarter has shown that our campaign not only has the momentum, but the resources necessary to return Michigan's 7th Congressional District to conservative representation,” said Rooney.

In thanking his supporters, Rooney said, “I am very grateful and truly humbled by the support of Michiganders who have been struggling during these hard economic times.” He continued, “It means a great deal to me and my campaign to see that not only are we sacrificing, but Michigan families are giving what they can because they are thirsty for new leadership.  Together, we will build a stronger and more prosperous Michigan.”

Rooney currently has $419,116 in cash on hand. His Republican opponents, who have been running for Congress for over a year, have $364,398 and $1,569 available in cash on hand.  Rooney has raised close to $700,000 since entering the race last November.  Some of Rooney's notable contributors include Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, and William Ford, executive chairman of the Ford Motor Company.

Manby, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Herschend Family Entertainment, was recently featured in the first season of Undercover Boss on CBS. His episode was the second most watched of the season and drew more than 16.72 million viewers nationally.

“Although I live in Georgia, Michigan is still close to my heart," said Manby. "We need dramatic change in Michigan government to get it back on track and Brian Rooney has what it takes. He is a proven leader and patriot and he isn’t a politician. We need common sense in government, not more lifetime politicians. I support Brian Rooney”

In accepting the endorsement, Rooney said, “I am grateful for Joel Manby’s support.” He continued, “I am running for Congress because I believe that President Obama and Congressman Schauer’s fiscally irresponsible policies are mortgaging our childrens' futures. I am opposed to their agenda of higher taxes, increased regulation, and out-of-control deficit spending. Michiganders deserve better. Our children deserve better. If I am elected to Congress, I will stand against this fiscal irresponsibility. I will fight tirelessly for pro-growth and pro-jobs economic policies so that we can get Michiganders back to work.”
